Miss Alma Tullis, Ellsworth, Kansas

Editorís Note: A couple of months ago, I was contacted by Elaine Cecil of Lake Havasu City, AZ, who had purchased an old photo at an antique shop in Kansas. It was a photo of a young woman identified on the back as "Miss Alma Tullis, Ellsworth, Kansas". Having found my Tullis family tree information on the Web, she contacted me to find out if I might be related to Alma. It didnít take me too long to figure out who Alma was, and that, in fact, she would be my fourth cousin twice removed! Elaine was kind enough to let me have the photo to share in this newsletter along with what Iíve been able to learn about Alma. If anyone is a more immediate relative of Almaís and would like to have the photo, please contact me (TomTullis@aol.com).

Alma Pearl Tullis was born February 3, 1880, in Kansas to John Henry Tullis (1849-1919) and his wife Margaret VanBoskirk. John was a son of Michael Tullis (1815-1902) and Rebecca Leonard (1822-1886). Almaís older sister, Elva Ree Tullis, had been born a few years earlier on April 29, 1877. The family appears on the 1880 census in Ellsworth, KS, with Alma as a 4-month-old baby. The family also appears on the 1900 census in Ellsworth (p. 252A) and the 1910 census in Salina, KS (ED 133, Sheet 4A). In both of these censuses, both daughters are single and listed as bookkeepers. The entire family is also listed in the 1917 City Directory for Salina, where John is listed as Deputy Sheriff. John died in 1919; it is not known when Margaret died. The 1923 Salina City Directory lists only Elva and Alma Tullis. The 1930 census for Salina (ED 85, Sheet 13B) shows them living together, both single, Elva as a cashier and Alma a stenographer.

It appears that neither Alma nor Elva married. According to the Social Security Death Index, Elva Tullis died in April 1967 and Alma Tullis died in September 1977, at the age of 97, in Salina, Kansas.

If anyone has more information about the family, Iíd appreciate hearing from you.
